The Author Who Was Already Dead

In 1967, Roland Barthes wrote one of the most provocative essays in literary theory: The Death of the Author. His argument was philosophical — the author’s intentions are irrelevant to the meaning a text produces. Meaning is generated in the act of reading, not the act of writing.

It was polemical. It was designed to liberate the text from the tyranny of the biographical figure behind it. And it was, critically, a description of how meaning works — not a description of how communication infrastructure is built.

The Platform’s Different Death

When a TikTok audio clip propagates through 400,000 videos, each one a new performance of the same fragment in a new context with a new meaning — the question of who originally produced the sound becomes functionally irrelevant. Not philosophically. Structurally.

The “author” is a node in a generative chain. Not a source. The text doesn’t originate anymore. It mutates.

“The author died not because meaning was always reader-generated. The author died because the infrastructure made authorship optional.”

Why the Institutional Consequence Matters

Every institution we have built to manage the social consequences of communication rests on the assumption of attributable authorship. Copyright law assumes a fixed author who owns expression. Defamation law assumes a speaker who can be held to their words. Journalistic ethics assumes editorial accountability to a named source. The architecture of trust that allows a society to function as a shared epistemic project assumes that when someone says something publicly, there is a someone.

User-generated content didn’t just challenge these institutions. It made them category errors — not wrong, exactly, but addressed to a condition that no longer reliably obtains.

The AI Problem Is Not New

Generative AI doesn’t introduce a new problem into this ecosystem. It reveals the degree to which the ecosystem was never as sound as the participation narrative required.

When synthetic content is indistinguishable — at the level of its effects on belief and behavior — from human-produced content, the category of “user-generated content” dissolves not from external pressure, but from internal incoherence. The AI that science fiction warned about never came. Instead we got recommendation algorithms quietly reshaping what billions of people see, believe, and want.

The Question That Replaces the Wrong One

“Who made this?” is a question about the past. About origin. About fixing blame to a historical act.

The right question is: “Who is implicated?”

Implication is a question about the present and the future — about ongoing accountability in an ecosystem where making, amplifying, and deploying have become the same act. It demands not a theory of authorship but a theory of complicity.

That theory does not yet exist in any form that our institutions can act on. Building it is one of the most urgent tasks of communication scholarship. And it is the question that the rest of this series will attempt, part by part, to move toward.
